Ottomans are also great to use as a foot rest. If you buy a soft, round ottoman, you'll never want to leave you chair! Great after a long day at work, or relaxing in front of a fire in winter.
Most people use this type of footstool with a sofa or chair, where they are not only functional but also help to enhance the overall look of the room. However, they can also be used in a home office as a foot rest while you recline in your office chair pondering the state of the universe.
If you're planning to get ottomans for your patio or in any outdoor area around your home, you can consider those made of stone such as granite or marble. You'll need the weight to keep these pieces on the ground. If you put anything lighter there, your ottoman could just end up next door when the wind is strong. Stone also lets those pieces withstand other natural elements such as the rain, snow or the sun. When you have to let furniture stay outside your home, you need it in a type of material that will really hold up, and stone is just perfect.
Apart from the internal structure of the ottoman, you should also consider the material that will be used to cover it. Definitely, it has to be durable enough so as to prevent foam or fibers from sticking out and making an unsightly view in your home. Some of the more popular materials used to cover ottomans these days are microsuedes, suedes, cotton blends and, of course, leather.
The ottomans were the favorite piece of furniture named after the Ottoman Empire, which lasted from 1299 until 1922. The Ottoman Empire spanned three continents, Western Asia, Eastern and Southeastern Europe and North Africa. World War One ended Ottoman rule in these parts of the world, but not the spread of its cherished footstool. Even after the empire lost its power, the name stuck to this very versatile and useful footrest and its popularity spread like wild fire, especially in America. In one sense, the ottomans have reconquered a large share of the world and arguably, more people know the name now than they did when the real Ottomans were in control.
